What is Sustainable Travel?

Sustainable Travel refers to an effort to reduce negative impacts in tourism destinations in order to preserve resources for the present and future. Sustainable tourism balances social, economic, and environmental efforts in its model approach. These factors serve as the basis for the 4 E's of E4 Initiatives: Education (social), Ecology, Economy, and Ecotourism (nature tourism) as we strive to achieve this balanced model of sustainable tourism.

What elements of travel can be classified as sustainable (or non-sustainable)?

So when we discuss sustainable travel we are referring to the degree to which tourism services (listed above) are able to offset any negative impacts caused by travel, related to social, economic, and environmental standards.

E4 travel services are designed with sustainability in mind...
  • E4 books all rental car reservations with Mapache Rental Car. Mapache offsets company carbon emissions each year through FONAFIFO rainforest preservation projects.
  • We book all domestic air reservations with Nature Air. Nature Air is Costa Rica's and the world's first airline to completely offset carbon emissions, also through FONAFIFO projects.
  • E4 guided itineraries include low impact activities. Our unguided itineraries & excursions may include moderate impact activities. We do not offer high impact activities (sorry, no ATVS with E4!)*
  • We also choose activities offered by businesses that have a high rate of employees native to the geographical or tourism region (i.e. ATEC).
  • E4 incorporates history and culture into each guided itinerary. We highlight indigenous communities through guided and non-guided itineraries encouraging visitors to support and embrace Costa Rica's indigenous culture.
  • We encourage visitors to participate in volunteer activities providing support for programs focused on education, the environment and social well-being (i.e. Rahab Foundation)
  • E4 supports and facilitates rural tourism, working closely with grassroots organization, ECOSUR, in the town of El Sur de Turrubares located near Carara National Park.
  • 75% of hotel and lodging options offered in our itineraries either: have achieved level 2 or higher sustainability certification from the Tourism Board of Costa Rica (ICT) or are currently enrolled in the Best Management Practices Program offered by Rainforest Alliance.

When combined these sustainable services provide one of the best models of responsible tourism currently available for visitors to Costa Rica.

*Selections are based on an environmental impact study (IBIS) performed by E4 Initiatives to evaluate tourism related activities in Costa Rica. Criteria and manual provided by Rainforest Alliance.
