E Four Initiatives, SA All Rights Reserved 2007-2008
Education: E4 is committed to educating travelers on the current state of Costa Rica as well as ways in which they can participate in sustainable tourism. We are also committed to local schools in Costa Rica, providing aid and assistance through volunteer and fund raising programs.
Why? - E4 believes that education at the elementary, high school, and college level is vital to bringing about any real change in global mentality regarding our impact on the environment. This includes visitors, but is most important for hosts, in this case the youth of Costa Rica who will have the responsibility of caring for the environment in the near future.

Ecology: E4 is committed to preserving and protecting the environment, wildlife, and Costa Rica's natural resources. Our family run business effectively operates two phone lines and two computers from our home office allowing us to minimize our use of electricity. The majority of our correspondence and paperwork is done via email and electronic forms (pdfs) in order to avoid wasting paper. We have also established the E4 Fund; half of its proceeds are donated to reforestation projects through FONAFIFO.
Why? - At E4 we love wildlife, and we love it even more when our guests experience wildlife. The reality is that our animal populations are shrinking, and we believe that our personal impact on the environment is the culprit. It is our responsibility as a business in Costa Rica to first set an example in our own practices, and then offer options for visitors to follow that example.
Economy: E4 is committed to efforts that support and boost local tourism economies. We choose to support hotels and lodges that have achieved sustainable certification from the Tourism Board of Costa Rica as well as hotels currently enrolled in the Best Management Practices Program offered by Rainforest Alliance. E4 provides free advertising for all businesses providing sustainable services in Costa Rica.
Why? - Requirements for sustainable certification include the % of local employees working at the hotel and level of community involvement for each respective hotel. Supporting businesses that provide opportunities for members of their community is one way to ensure that the people who make tourism work, are being taken care of.
Ecotourism: E4 is committed to eco, or nature tourism. We choose to highlight rural tourism and indigenous tourism as part of this initiative. E4 works directly with the ECOSUR, the grassroots organization of El Sur de Turrubares, facilitating volunteer vacations and rural tourism to this farming community near Carara National Park. We also feature visits to indigenous communities of Bribri, Yorkin, and Guaymi through our tour packages.
Why? - Costa Rica has a rich history that lends much to our understanding of the present; perhaps something to say for the future as well. While museums and monuments are nice, we believe that living history is history at its best. For this reason we highlight Costa Rica's culture through communities that have embraced, protected, and preserved their natural history.
