Ideal for backpackers, wildlife enthusiasts, beach bums, and honeymooners alike, Montezuma is the perfect location for travelers seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of overpopulated tourist destinations. Montezuma combines the charm and laidback vibe of a hippy town with empty beaches, lush rainforest, and lodging options for all budgets. The result is a remote paradise that can truly be described as hidden jewel when it comes to choosing the perfect destination for your next trip to Costa Rica. Now, don’t make the mistake of listening to those who tell you that Montezuma is a bunch of dreadlock wearing Rastas baking away (in more ways than one) under the sun. Sure, this place was originally founded some 30 years ago as a hippy town, but Montezuma has a bit more to offer than reggae nights and spliffs. The town’s origins actually give it some of its best qualities: peace, tranquility, and lots of smiles.
Montezuma is also one of the healthiest town’s in Costa Rica as many residents are avid fans of yoga, veggies, and overall wellness. Others may tell you that there’s nothing to do in Montezuma, that it’s too far away and not worth the trouble of getting there. Once again, don’t make the mistake of listening to these critics. After taking a few steps into ‘town’ you will take notice of a number of tour agencies offering half and full day excursions to fill your schedule with during your stay. I’ll fill you in on a little secret: If you have a hint of adventurous spirit inside you’re better off exploring and enjoying the natural landscape while avoiding high priced tours.

Activities
So what is there to do? One of Montezuma’s best assets may be its endless stretches of white sand beaches. You can literally walk a few steps from your hotel and have a significant section of the beach all to yourself. In the morning I recommend taking a walk along the beach and just keep going. You’re bound to encounter monkeys in the trees, beautiful blue waters, and a few hidden waterfalls if you walk far enough. Don’t be afraid to explore in Montezuma. Its small enough that it’s hard to get lost and the farther you go the more treasures you’ll find.
After a day at the beach its time to check out the rainforest. A short walk south of town (about 10 minutes to the left of the main beach) will bring you to the trail leading to a spectacular series of waterfalls. The trail is well marked and locals will point you in the right direction if you’re not sure. Once on the trail, follow the stream for about 30-40 minutes until you reach the falls. The waterfall is a popular destination for tourists as well as a hangout spot for locals. The first waterfall you’ll encounter is an 80 ft giant offering a pristine pool at the bottom that is great for swimming. Notice I said swimming and not jumping. If you’re looking for heart stopping thrills you can jump from the second of the three falls. Follow the trail up the hill to the second waterfall (ask the locals to point out the best route). The second pool is deep enough for jumping, but don’t be a fool and attempt a dive. The third waterfall is much smaller compared to its brethren and even has a rope swim (for people like me) that drops you into the cool calm waters of the third pool. Overall, the waterfalls are great for reading, napping, swimming, or a picnic lunch. The hike to and from is relatively easy-going; although you may have to trek through the stream from time to time, so dress appropriately.

During your stay in Montezuma you may also check out Cabo Blanco Wildlife Reserve, Costa Rica’s oldest protected area. Cabo Blanco requires transportation to get there, and a taxi or public bus from Montezuma will do the trick. The reserve offers well-maintained trails and excellent opportunities to see wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, squirrels, deer, agoutis, and raccoons. Be sure to visit the beach for spectacular views of the coast and check with park rangers upon entrance for the status of trails that may be muddy in the rain season.
Of all the tours offered in Montezuma I definitely recommend the day trip to Turtle Island (Isla de Tortuga). Boats leave early in the morning from the main beach bouncing along gentle waves and clear blue waters for about a half hour before arriving at the tropical island. Most tours include snorkeling, which is done along the reefs off the coast. You will definitely be able to see a variety of tropical fish, some with brilliant colors, but don’t expect anything compared to the Caribbean Islands or South Pacific. Afterwards head ashore for a delicious barbeque lunch in the shade. Spend the rest of the day on the beach lounging in the sun, swimming, or kayaking in the gentle waters off the coast before heading back to Montezuma. On the way back you may witness playful dolphins jumping alongside your boat for the perfect ending to a day in paradise.
Food & Nightlife
Despite its small size, Montezuma has much to offer when it comes to nightlife. Diners will appreciate the variety of international cuisine available. Dancers can shake what their mommas gave the bars and nightclubs. Those seeking romance can grab a drink and head out to the beach, which is a must see on a clear night. For me, there is something truly magical about Montezuma nights as I witnessed more stars than I have ever seen while peering up to the heavens here. Now, I should say that there is choice when it comes to nightlife, however the options are limited. Remember, Montezuma is a small, charming, and intimate town.
During the day be sure to check out the local bakeries and cafes for great pastries, coffee, and sandwiches. Restaurants offer excellent Italian, French, and Mediterranean cuisine. Seafood here is great. This is also one of the best places in Costa Rica for veggie eats.

Lodging
When it comes to hotel and lodging options, there is something for travelers of all budgets. Instead of going through each hotel in boring detail I have chosen to highlight my top choices for the area.
Luz de Mono – This place is worth the splurge, although the price tag isn’t as high as other premier destinations throughout the country. The ‘casitas’ or private bungalows are perfect for honeymooners and couples. For an extra $40 you can enjoy your own private outdoor Jacuzzi. It’s definitely worth the splurge in my opinion. The hotel has its own bar and restaurant serving well priced dishes from $5-$12. Be sure to try the restaurant’s own brand of wine before leaving this place.
Price - $70/$90 for standard rooms; $120/$140 for private ‘casitas’ with/without private Jacuzzi. Breakfast is included.
Why I Like It – This place is an ecolodge with solar heated showers and a restaurant that displays work from local artists. These sustainable features are big plus for me and others seeking guilt free vacations in paradise. The views and Jacuzzis are great and the wine is even better! Eco-luxury at its best in Montezuma.
Hotel Los Mangos – This is my favorite lodging option in Montezuma. Visitors have the choice of standard rooms or elegantly designed bungalows that sit along the hill. The grounds are well kept and include a yoga pavilion and pool with Jacuzzi and magnificent views of the coast. Standard rooms are great for small groups of friends traveling together. A few rooms have shared baths for budget travelers. The bungalows are super nice, sleep three comfortably, and should be considered as a first choice for anyone staying here.
Price - $35/$65 for standard rooms with shared/private baths. $85 for bungalows.
Why I Like It – Perfect location, far enough from town to drown out the late reggae nights, close enough to walk (5 minutes). The beach is right across the street. The pool has amazing views of the ocean. Yoga classes are held daily in the pavilion.
Hotel La Cascada – The perfect spot for travelers on a limited budget who don’t want their hotel room to show it. The rooms are simple but well equipped with private hot water baths, comfortable beds, and ocean views. The best feature is the large balcony with enough hammocks for everyone, providing a great setting for meeting new friends, enjoying a book, napping, or just hanging out (pun definitely intended). Rooms with capacity from 1-5 people are great for friends traveling together.
Price - $40 for standard rooms.
Why I Like It – The hammocks with ocean views of course. The crepes served at the adjacent restaurant are excellent as well.

Best Kept/Un-kept Secrets
• Montezuma also has various options for backpackers. The only drawback is a lack of security and hot water!
• With respect to crime, Montezuma is one of the safest places in Costa Rica. This seems to be due to the mindset of the people including their contentment and respect for others. This doesn’t mean you should leave your possessions out in the open unattended, but you definitely have less to worry about when compared to other locations throughout the country.
• In terms of getting there and getting out, Montezuma is out of the way but accessible by private transportation and public bus. My recommendation would be a rental car or better yet the taxi boat that runs daily between Montezuma and Jaco. Jaco is accessible by a much shorter public bus ride or semi private shuttle from San Jose.
• If you’re an early riser you can find one of many high vantage points in the hills of Montezuma to witness humpback whales passing by on their migration to the north and south. Ask the locals for the best places to experience this amazing site.
