Students and faculty will learn about the species of butterfly that will call their new garden home, including their preference for food and environment, as well as natural predators. Learning about the cultivation of butterfly friendly plants will be key to the students' ability to contribute to the sustainability of the butterfly garden in the future.
Classroom instruction will be accompanied by hands on activities as the students take an active role in building the butterfly garden from the ground up. As students and faculty see their completed project and participate in its upkeep, preservation, and care we hope that they are able to apply this small lesson to their world outside of the classroom walls.
At E4 we feel its important to provide education that has long lasting effects and truly benefits generations to follow us. For this reason we think the Butterfly Garden is an excellent way to teach young people about ways in which they can use their environment for responsible tourism, in a way that benefits their community and conserves natural resources.
What we need:
We anticipate that this project will last anywhere from 1 week to 1-2 months depending on how often and for how much time our local artist is able to leave her work and donate her time here in Jaco, about 1.5 hours from her residence.
E4 has taken the responsibility to seek out funding for the project including meals and lodging for our artist as well as transportation and costs of art materials.
This project will provide opportunities for students to contribute with ideas and/or brush strokes! The mural will tell a story, our initial ideas include the past, present, and future of the school with themes relating to the environment, culture, and heritage of Costa Rica.

What we need:
In a joint effort with the Central Pacific Chamber of Commerce, E4 Initiatives is working to bring a library to the school. We realize that initial resources for literature may be limited and are therefore expanding our effort to put more books on the shelves when they arrive.
E4 Initiatives is reaching out to publishers abroad specializing in children's literature as well as individuals who may have overstocked or used books they may be able to donate to this project.
We have also taken the time to identify books that would be key additions to the 'bilingual section' of our humble library. A list of these books can be found here:
