Monteverde & Santa Elena are classic destinations for visitors to Costa Rica. Monteverde is a Quaker establishment, while nearby Santa Elena is a Tico (Costa Rican) settlement. Monteverde is best described as a naturalist's dream on the verge of commercial ecotourism. The biggest attraction here is the famous cloud forest home to the legendary quetzal bird and a unique ecosystem equally enjoyed by birders, hikers, and visitors seeking a break from the heat and humidity of other destinations in Costa Rica. Monteverde features many nature based attractions including orchid gardens, butterfly gardens, serpentariums, hummingbird gardens, insect exhibits, and canopy zip lines and hanging bridges that traverse the rainforest. Many lodging options in the area provide peaceful natural settings and sustainable features. Hotels and lodges in Monteverde set the initial standard for environmental sustainability, a model now adopted by various hotels throughout the country. Be sure to take advantage of the Jeep-Boat-Jeep transportation option between Monteverde and La Fortuna/Arenal. For great food and live music at night check out Moon Shiva Restaurant.

Sustainable Vacations featuring Monteverde: Costa Rica Classic (guided), Eco-Education (guided), Birder's Dream (self-guided), Family Vacation (self-guided)

Cloud Forest

Just about everyone passing through Monteverde will visit the cloud forest. This unique ecosystem is home to over 400 bird species so be sure to bring your binoculars. The region offers two options for cloud forest excursions.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve: 13km of marked trails (9 total), the most popular forming a triangle. this cloud forest receives 10 times the number of visitors than its counterpart. As a result there is a maximum number of visitors allowed inside at one time. Our advice is to get their before 7am. Hire a local guide to increase chances of seeing wildlife. Due ti heavy traffic (again), the animals have learned to stay away from the main trails. Of course the flora itself is well worth a visit to this cloud forest.

Santa Elena Reserve: This cloud forest is a dwarfed by the popular Monteverde Reserve but still has much too offer. With less traffic, wildlife sightings are increased. Santa Elena is an excellent option for visitors who are looking for a more a little more peace and quiet on their hike through this fairy tale forest.

We highly recommend a night hike through the cloud forest to increase opportunities for seeing wildlife.
