Sustainable Vacations featuring Manuel Antonio: Costa Rica Classic (guided), Family Vacation (self-guided), Responsible Luxury (self-guided)

This private rainforest reserve belongs to Si Como No Hotel. The main attraction is the butterfly garden home to more than three dozen species of butterflies.
Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge is actually located on the road to Dominical (from Quepos/Manuel Antonio). The refuge is made up of 330 hectares of protected land ranging from prisitine beaches, river banks, mangrove estuaries, and wetlands to logged forest, secondary forest, primary forest, and tree plantations. This diverse habitat is home to 350 bird species, 70 mammals, 95 reptiles, 90 butterflies, and 160 tree. species. Canopy tours, bird watching, hiking tours as well as overnight camping is available for nature-seekers.
The main attraction in Manuel Antonio. If you want to see monkeys this is the place to be. The park does feel like a safari/zoo at times due to the heavy tourist traffic and almost gauranteed wildlife sitings. Hire a guide if you'd like, but you're better off saving $20 and tagging along with one of the numerous guided tours that will be going on during your visit. Just look up when you see a group of 10-15 people staring at the trees! Wildlife isnt hard to spot on your own either.
Solar heated water, recycling, and energy efficient air conditioning units mark some of the sustainable efforts made by this luxury hotel. Rooms have windows and balconies to enhance your experience in the hotel's rainforest setting. Si Como No has two pools (one for kids and one for adults only) as well as solar heated Jacuzzis. If that's not enough the hotel also has two restaurants and owns Fincas Naturales butterfly garden across the street. Great for families and children under 12 stay for free!

Own by a Costa Rican family this beach and jungle resort is reasonably priced. The hotel offers standard and superior rooms with AC, hot water showers, and phone. The hotel also has a swimming pool, jacuzzi, coffee shop, and a New York style pizza restaurant.

OK, so Banana Tree doesn't have any sustainable characteristics, but with a shortage of sustainable lodging options in the area we decided to include this place because we really like it and its lots of fun! Rooms are bright and vibrant with original artwork. This place is great for groups and young people. All rooms have AC, hot water, cable TV and there is also a small pool. Inquire about the loft style room that sleeps 4-6. Nice proximity to the park, close to MA's best restaurants. Definitely our favorite hotel in Manuel Antonio.
