Many tourists may be in a rush to get out of the Central Valley and explore the "real Costa Rica". The capital city of San Jose and nearby suburbs of Alajuela, Heredia, Escazu, and Cartago however, have much to offer in culture, nightlife, food and tourist activities.

The Rundown

San Jose: The capital city, the heart of the country. Chepe, as some Ticos call it, is the center of business, commerce, pop-culture, and the arts.

the good: San Jose is a city on the rise. Pedestrian only streets like Avenida Central are attractive for walkers, tourists, and diners. Nightlife.

the bad: crime is an issue, although the city has become safer with the majority of crime limited to theft and pick-pocketing.

the beautiful: Culture. Be sure to check out the Gold and Jade Museums, Children's Museum, Museum of Costa Rican Art, and the National Theater.
