Arenal is one of Costa Rica's most visited destinations. Arenal volcano takes center stage as this napping giant can be seen from just about anywhere in the Arenal area (and miles beyond!). The Arenal/La Fortuna area provides a mild climate for guests, an escape from the sometimes unbearable heat and humidity found in other regions of the country. Families and first time visitors to Costa Rica should definitely include Arenal in their travel plans. The volcano provides spectacular lava shows (when it wants to) and often experiences small eruptions! The nearby town of La Fortuna is a great place to grab a meal before watching sunset from the park in the middle of town. La Fortuna Waterfall would be the star of the show anywhere else; here it takes on a supporting role if you're planning to spend a few days or more in the area you may want to check out Lake Arenal, one of the top three rated spots for windsuring worldwide. Be sure to make use of the convenient jeep-boat-jeep option for transport between Arenal and Monteverde.

Sustainable Vacations featuring Arenal: Eco-Education (guided tour), Costa Rica Classic (guided), Costa Rica Multi-Sport (guided & self-guided), Family Vacation (self-guided), Responsible Luxury (self-guided), Hot n Cool (self-guided excursion)

Tabacon Hot Springs

You can't leave Arenal without a visit to the thermal springs heated by the volcano. Tabacon is our top choice among others in the region. Pools and waterfalls of various temperatures are dispersed within a beautiful tropical garden/jungle setting. Main pool with bar and slide are a nice touch. Definitely the place to rest and relax after a long day of activity in and around Arenal.

La Fortuna Waterfall

You'll quickly forget your disappoitment should Arenal fail to erupt during your stay with a visit to these falls towering 70m, dispensing a magnificent and powerful display of water. Small pools located around the falls provide safe swimming. The cool pristine waters should be inviting after the journey. The falls can be reached by hiking, on horseback, by car or taxi.

Arenal National Park

For those who want to get up close and personal with the mighty Arenal Volcano a trek through the park provides opportunities for visitors to do so. Marked trails (stay on them!) take you by the sites of past lava flows as well as sections of rainforest where white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys can be seen. Keep an ear out (or both covered) for massive explosions from Arenal's crater. Boom!

....and please don't try to climb the volcano, its dangerous.
