E4 Initiatives was established with a vision for the future of education, ecology, the economy, and ecotourism in Costa Rica. Below is a list of future plans, goals, and dreams that E4 believes are all possible with the help and participation of local businesses, international investors, and of course responsible travelers. Some ideas may seem more distant than others, however we feel it is important to work for tomorrow, today.
E4 Initiatives is concerned for the welfare of children here in Costa Rica. For orphans and abused children E4 would like to contribute to the establishment of theme orphanages, centers providing shelter, nutrition, healthcare, and education for children. Locations near the beach and rainforest would provide opportunities for hands on education and unique recreational activities. Of course this plan would have to meet strict approval by government, education, and child welfare officials in Costa Rica, but it is far from impossible to achieve.
Continuing with this theme of improving the quality of life for future generations, E4 is also interested in sharing in the planning, funding, and operation of model eco schools, located in blossoming tourism communities. These schools would incorporate principles of conservation and responsible tourism into daily activities, recreation, meals, waste management, and curriculum. English would be highlighted as a second language but not exclusive, with an emphasis on basic vocabulary and conversation in various languages of Europe and Asia available as well, to reflect the growth of diversity within the tourist population. E4 believes that this form of education can be facilitated using technology; computers, the internet, and effective language software, serving as aids and valuable resources for teachers in the classroom.
E4 is also concerned with the status of small communities, particularly rural communities, affected by the recent shift in economics from agriculture to tourism. E4 recognizes community-based/rural ecotourism as the most effective way to provide opportunity for these communities to participate in this new form of commerce without uprooting and drastically changing their way of life. After all, tourism that results in the relocation of local residents can not be considered sustainable or responsible.
Instead, we would like to see the model of ecotourism in El Sur repeated in two or three locations targeted for future tourism development throughout Costa Rica. Current locations of interest include Costa Ballena a place frequented by humpback whales and other marine life, Osa Peninsula, and the Caribbean Coast. Development of community based ecotourism is beneficial for local economies and education, as well as long term conservation of the environment and natural resources, which are in many cases if not all, the reason for initially exploring tourism development in the respective area.
